Chicken Dopiaza

Special treat to all Homemade recipe lovers. Chicken Dopiaza is an authentic dish which I have tasted in several restaurants at my hometown Kolkata but my recipe goes to show a different touch altogether. Cooking in its own term relentless way of mixing and matching your culinary skills which get enriched with your thoughtful desire to taste something delicious.


  • 800 grams of Chicken ( Murg) with bones
  • 250 gm yogurt
  • 4 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 3 tbsp ginger paste
  • 3 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 big cinnamon
  • 5-6 cloves
  • 5 pepper corns
  • 2 big onions freshly chopped and 1 other in circular medium pieces
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 5 green chili paste
  • salt to taste
  • 4 tbsp of Mustard Oil
  • 2 big tomatoes cut into small pieces


Step 1

Put the washed chicken into a medium bowl. Sprinkle turmeric and salt to marinade. Keep it aside for next 15 minutes.

Step 2

Take a Kadai on medium flame Add oli.

Step 3

While the oil is getting hot , add pepper corns. Listen to the crackling sound. It makes me happy every time. I feel something is getting excited other than me 🙂

Step 4

Chopped onions go in to this. saute these really well that after sometime they get golden brown without getting burnt.

Step 5

Time to add ginger and onion paste. Mix them thoroughly with golden onions. Quickly add tomatoes , green chili paste and toss everything several times.

Step 6

Sprinkle hot spices like cinnamon, cloves after grinding them hard in mixture grinder. Side by the side you need to keep everything moving in the kadai, otherwise rich spices will get stuck into the bottom.

Step 7

Whisker yogurt again and again before putting into Kadai. You do not want yogurt lumps to be seen in the smoothie. Now slowly stir the spices until it leaves oil on top.

Step 8

Perfect time to add turmeric powder, red chili powder along with salt.

Step 9

Main ingredient chicken goes into it. Saute all the spices.Add the left over onion pieces before adding water to boil the recipe. Put the lid on for next 15 minutes.

Step 10

You are ready to serve your very own homemade Chicken Dopiaza. It can be tasted will hot Zeera Rice!!!

      One more thing you may try out. Prepare a simple pulao dish and eat chicken dopiaza as a side dish with it. Let me know how did you enjoy..:) I will share the simple Pulao recipe soon from my end too..
