Khichdi with Pink Lentils ( Musoor Daal)

Yummy launch could not ever start with anything else than instant Khichdi with Pink Lentils in a rainy season especially. Rice when cook with lentils gives away a nice healthy soupy dish. A delectable  khichdi recipe is no  wonder to Bengali kitchens. Aubergine  fries would accompany it best in  a Winter noon.

Every recipe gets a newer look and feel if tossed with different spices and recipe for khichdi is no exception. I tried my hands on with vegetable khichdi recipe when I was just 16 years old. My mother  taught me how to extract flavor from spices in rice and slowly I started learning a lot of lentils in India. Being a Bengali in heart, it was almost essential to capture the essence of how to prepare Indian food.Today this bengali khichdi recipe is a landmark for my culinary career..


  • 200 gm Pink Lentils
  • 150 gm Basamati Rice
  • 3 chopped medium onions
  • 3 green chillies
  • 2 tsp cumin seed
  • 2 medium cinnamons
  • 4 medium cloves
  • 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 7-8 tbsp sugar
  • 1 big tomato
  • 100 gm green peas
  • 5 -6 medium potatoes cut into 4 pieces each
  • salt to taste
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp pure ghee


Step 1

Mix Ginger Garlic paste with cumin seed, chopped onions, cinnamon, cloves, green chilly and tomatoes in a mixer grinder.

Step 2

take a Kadai on medium flame. Add oil.

Step 3

Pour the prepared spice mixture. Add turmeric powder.Saute well till the oil comes up from the spices.

Step 4

Add potatoes, green beans and mix them with the spices.Keep the whole mixture aside.

Step 5

Take a Cooker. Add lentils and rice as above mentioned. Add generous amount of water because you do not want your Khichdi to too dry and also for the sake of boiling the rice- lentil mixture well. Put the lid on and blow one whistle. Keep it for another two to three minutes on flame and then turn off the fire.

Step 6

When your cooker is ready to open, take off the lid and pour the entire spic, potato mixture into the cooker.

Step 7

Its time to add sugar and salt. Keep stirring the entire thing slowly and steadily.

Step 8

Let all the ingredients come together for next 15 minutes and your Khichdi with Pink Lentils is ready to serve.

Step 9

Just add Ghee on top to let your guests feel the smoky yet sweet smell of hot Khichdi.
