Entire credit goes to my sweet Mother who introduces this recipe Rohu Fish Stew(Rui Macher Jhol) to me while I was just about to enter the vast world of cooking. Like every other child, I was not allowed to enter Kitchen every time I initiated to make an effort on my own. My mother used to scold me saying it is not the right time/age to explore cooking. According to her, cooking could have gross impact while I am to concentrate on my studies. She was deeply engrossed herself into the idea that cooking is something which develops on its own and it can not be forced to perform; similar to that of other great arts/disciplines. I slowly grew up my knowledge on cooking techniques and learned to respect my mother thoughts revolving around the notion “Cooking is an art’ strongly as the days go by. Rohu Fish Stew (Rui Macher Jhol) is perhaps the most adored tasty and healthy dish invented by my Mother. I can vouch on the fact that no one has ever tasted the recipe before without coming into the lap of my Mother:) . It consists of very simple vegetables – egg plants, cabbages and potato(optional). I enjoy cooking and eating this recipe during my lunch. I squeeze a little Lemon while eating the jhol with hot rice. I encourage my friends to follow this process and who knows; you may end up tasting the heavenly satisfying flavor of the stew made up of Rohu Fish.
Rohu Fish is an integral part of Bengali Kitchens. No one seems to imagine authentic Bengali dishes without a single mention to Rohu Fish(Rui Mach) . I am averse to term this particular recipe as ‘authentic Bengali recipe’ as the cooking techniques used in this recipe is strikingly different from what we find over internet. This tasty and healthy dish is not only a great source of green vegetables but also a sumptuous side dish for lunch during any season throughout the year. Try it fast my friends:)
- 1/3 rd of Big Cabbage(shredded)
- 1 big tomato (chopped)
- 1 egg plant/ brinjal cut into 8 -10 pieces
- 2 medium potatoes (each cut into 6 pieces lengthwise) - Optional ingredient
- Long beans cut into 8 - 10 pieces
- 3 tbsp of ground coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp mustard paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- salt to taste
- 2 medium cups of water
- 3-4 tsp vegetable oil (Sundrop heart) to fry the fish pieces and 1 and 1/2 tbsp oil for cooking
- 8 medium pieces of Rohu Fish
- 2 tbsp of ginger paste
Fry the fish and keep them aside.
Toss the vegetables into oil and keep them in a separate container.
Put oil on medium flame.
Add cumin seeds and green chillies.
Throw tomato pieces and ginger paste. Stir them occasionally till they start leaving oil.
2 green chillies cut into halves
Add coriander powder. Pour all the vegetables and saute into the spices.
Coat the vegetables into spices and time to add fish.
Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt. Toss everything well.
Put sufficient water to boil everything. Put the lid on.
Wait for 15 minutes.
Rohu Fish Stew(Rui Macher Jhol) is ready to accompany you with Hot rice during Lunch!
