Chickpea popularly known as Kabuli Chana is plain in taste but produce wonder if cooked with certain regular spices. I switched to Chickpeas from other lentils for their nutritional benefits. Dietary fiber and Iron rich Chickpeas are quite blank in taste if taken only with salt . I prepared both the recipe Spicy Chickpeas (Chana) with Chicken and without Chicken. People who are fond of vegetable preparations, please ignore chicken usage in the recipe. Both ways the recipe works wonderfully well. Chickpeas should be soaked in water before putting them on boil. Just one whistle is enough to make the chickpeas tender yet not fragile. I soaked the chickpeas overnight in cold water. The time frame could be reduced to 6 hours if someone has to hurry up in order to serve the guests on time:)
The term ‘Spicy’ has been used in the dish title Spicy Chickpeas (Chana) with Chicken because generous amount of cumin powder, coriander powder, Kashmiri Red Chilli powder, Chaat Masala, Garam Masala Powder (Indian Hot spices) etc. Fresh cream addition is optional but you may try this one too if Cholesterol is not a headache among your family and friends:) Rest of the nutritonal benefits of Chickpeas are more than just a passing affair to consider. Chicken mince are easily available to use but you may decide to cut chicken in small pieces at your home also if that is something which gives you pleasure to do @ home comfort. I generally use little amount of chicken in the recipe ; just to add the non vegetarian touch. Red meat could also be added in place of chicken. I consider chicken for the recipe Spicy Chickpeas (Chana) with Chicken because I like to keep it as a low key affair . Surprised? I am actually referring to non vegetarian touch:). I got a smile from every corner for the spicy yet low key supper made up of Chickpeas.
- Boiled chickpeas - 200gms
- 2 medium onions chopped
- 2 tbsp ginger paste
- 1 tbsp garlic paste
- 1 big tomato chopped
- 3 tsp cumin powder
- 4 tsp coriander powder
- 4 tsp chaat masala
- 2 tsp garam masala
- 3 - 4 tbsp fresh cream (optional)
- 40-50 gms minced chicken
- 2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 and 1/2 tsp Kashmiri red Chilli powder
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- coriander leaves to garnish
- 3 tbsp good vegetable oil
- 3 -4 green chillies halved
Deep fry onions. Add tomato, chillies, cumin powder, coriander powder, ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder and mix everything thoroughly.Let everything cook together until they leave oil.
Add boiled chickpeas and coat with the spices. Throw the minced chicken into the recipe almost at the same time.
Sprinkle Garam Masala, chaat Masala, Salt and fresh cream (optional).
Toss the ingredients together. Put the lid on after adding a small cup of water.
Check after 10 minutes if the water got soaked into recipe as we do not want to leave much gravy for the recipe.
Put lemon juice from top and garnish with coriander. Spicy Chickpeas (Chana) with Chicken is ready to serve:)
